Weatherstripping: Door Issues in Extremely Cold Temperatures

weatherstripping: Garage Door Issues in Extremely Cold Temperatures

Following another deep freeze in Alberta, it is important to highlight a seemingly minor issue that can cause significant problems in extreme cold: weatherstripping.

When temperatures drop to the -20°C to -30°C range, it is crucial to remember that steel expands. Most doors in the region are equipped with inexpensive steel weatherstripping that includes a small rubber fin. During installation, the door is typically pushed as far as possible toward the wall, with the weatherstripping forced into place—often beyond the wall—to achieve a proper seal.

This installation method results in the door becoming tightly pinned within the frame. The rollers prevent further movement, and as the steel expands due to the cold, the issue worsens. This can lead to several mechanical failures, including:

* Burnout of worm-drive gears in the motor
* Excessive stress on rollers, causing them to lose functionality
* Hinges buckling under constant pressure, leading to cracks and breakage
* Deterioration of weatherstripping, which removes paint and rust inhibitors from the door’s surface

Manufacturers often do not prioritize longevity, as their products are designed to last only through the warranty period.

At SOS, we take a different approach. Our products are built to last decades beyond the warranty. We use vinyl weatherstripping with fins made from EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), a synthetic rubber that is resistant to wear, tearing, and degradation. This ensures durability and long-term performance.

However, proper installation of high-quality weatherstripping can only be performed in warmer temperatures. When installed during cold weather, the material remains stiff and does not properly conform to the door’s sealing area. While it can still be installed in winter, it may require adjustments, such as resetting the motor’s force settings, to accommodate the initial resistance.

To prevent costly repairs next winter, we highly recommend scheduling an appointment with SOS in the spring or summer. This will allow for optimal installation, ensuring your door is fully sealed and protected before the next freeze.
